Nobody's Dolls"New Loafers" would have been the best song about loafers if only their was a single line about them. While almost all songs on The Big 3" sound more or less like The Clash debut "Hair" is almost tender and romantic and "Streamlined" is a mighty drug anthem: "Mary goes round, drugs made Mary vague. See how she cries my little methadone maid", but mostly it's all about loneliness: "The boys have gone and your tiny room is suffocating you. The one that you're looking for is me". This debut of fly-by-night Welsh trio surely made no revolution in rock music but was written smoothly into post-punk tradition if there is such a thing.

I can only agree with pyenapple with regards to 60ft Dolls whose debut album was quite a barnstorming classic in many respects and who really didn't get the credit they deserved. The album itself was chock full of quality tunes and varied quite considerably in some respects from the jangly yet powerful Pig Valentine to the quite superb Hair which not only underlines a more mature and thoughtful side of the band but may also have been a sign of better things to come if fate had been kinder to them. I also saw them live in 1996 at the Bridgend Recreation Centre alongside Bold as Love (another quality band who released one single for Polydor via a TV Battle of the Bands competition) and one other local act whose name now escapes me. All I can say is that it was a superb night and the Dolls for their part were brilliant which only underlines further how they never really got further than they did. The follow up is also a good album but alas the music scene had changed quite markedly in some respects which perhaps explains their eventual split.

I'm not sure why this is getting low ratings. The 60ft Dolls were a straight-forward, muscly UK power trio that didn't get its due. The album's a fantastic pastiche of stripped-down British guitar rock of the 70s and 80s, including elements of The Jam, Dr. Feelgood, etc.. Some songs are more thoughtful ("Stay"), some are just juggernauts of rock ("Terminal Crash Fear", "No 1 Pure Alcohol"). It's very basic in terms of instrumentation: guitar, bass, drums, vocals. Not much messing around with extra overdubs, as it should be. I saw these guys live once in 1996, it was pretty immense; they ended the set with a full-throttle "Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except For Me And My Monkey" by The Beatles, then smashed their gear and left the stage. Like Oasis flipped to 45rpm, only...not a put-on. Not calculated.
