The sixth volume in Beatrice Ardisson's La Musique de Paris Dernière series of popular songs from the '50s, '60s, and '70s is overseen by Ronin Hardiman. There are numerous standouts on this set, among them are Jazzistic & Karen Souza' jazz vocal reading of Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus," the Sunday Drivers' country-pop take on ABBA's "Dancing Queen," and the acid-folk choral reading of Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart" - in eight part harmony - by the Parsonage.

I bought my copy on the rue de Ecole de Medicine, across from the best greasy spoon in Paris called La Fourchette. This CD was the first I saw in a box of CD's on the sidewalk. All I had to see was that Shirley Bassey sang a cover of the Doors' "Light My Fire," and I was sold. Man, oh, man, was it the biggest bargain I found on my last trip to Paris. This album is an excellent compilation for music lovers, cocktail parties, and just about everyone/thing else. It's loungy yet dancy (with a little R&B) covers of mostly Beatles' tunes and other oldies. It also has the best cover ever made - a cabaresque version of "Sex Bomb. Not to sound cliche, but I first heard this CD in a cafe in Paris and I immediately fell in love with it. After returning to the states, I found the CD online and the songs are just as good outside the romantic, nostalgic setting of Paris (and world travel).
