Dirty Water" is a song by the American rock band The Standells, written by their producer Ed Cobb. The song is a mock paean to the city of Boston, Massachusetts and its then-famously polluted Boston Harbor and Charles River. The song's Boston and Charles River references are reportedly based on an experience of Cobb and his girlfriend with a mugger in Boston in the mid-1960s.
Dirty Water is the second studio album by the American rock band the Standells, released in May 1966. The majority of the album was recorded in the midst of touring in a two-day session in April 1966 at Audio Recording in Seattle, Washington, the same studio where The Sonics recorded their debut album.
In spite of the fact that the Standells were in California, this song is about the city of Boston and Boston Harbor and Charles River, which were notoriously polluted at the time. This was their first hit single. The line, "Frustrated women have to be in by 12 o'clock" refers to the curfew observed by Boston University co-eds at the time.

The single of Dirty Water was recorded in 1965 and the Standells album, Dirty Water, was recorded in 1966. So Ed Cobb flew up to Seattle where we recorded the Dirty Water album. We did the Standells first album in about three days and it was probably a four track studio. We were presented with a lot of the songs by local artists like Jim Valley, who wrote Little Sally Tease and eventually joined Paul Revere & the Raiders.

Along with Why Pick on Me, this was the group's strongest album, although you're always better off with a greatest hits collection. There Is a Storm Comin'" and "Pride and Devotion" are a couple of strong numbers that don't make it onto compilations, and "Rari, " the moody B-side of "Dirty Water, " tis one of their best little-known tracks
