They only wrote one song together in this time (an instrumental), but when The Tourists broke up, they formed Eurythmics as a duo and began writing together. Stewart tells the story in The Dave Stewart Songbook: "When we broke up as a couple for some strange reason it was like we were always going to be together, no matter what. Weezer did a lighter version for their 2019 Teal Album. Nas sampled this for his 1996 song "Sweet Dreams. In this program she said she didn't regard "Sweet Dreams" as a song but as a mantra.
When they wrote Sweet Dreams, Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart’s whirlwind romance had ended, but they were still looking for the perfect sound together. Stewart wrote in his memoir: This was a weird time in our lives. Annie and I had broke up, but we spent hours and hours together every day in the studio. Annie Lennox told the New York Times that they wrote the song after having a huge fight. I thought it was the end of the road and that was that. We were trying to write, and I was miserable. The day Dave and I ended our romance, Eurythmics began. I was curled up in the fetal position. He programmed this rhythm. In the end I couldn’t resist it. And while the British duo topped the charts during the entire decade, Sweet Dreams remains their greatest work. On the partition, Dave Stewart dabbled in a darker new wave, a-la Bowie (Love Is A Stranger) and dared venturing into krautrock light (Sweet Dreams). He could go funky (I’ve Got An Angel) or even disco (Wrap It Up). On vocals, Annie Lennox is impressive, as always, switching from soul to a bleak singing voice at will.
