The substitutions don't show. The Sports boasted a remarkably consistent sound throughout their career, with their earliest albums in particular snapping seamlessly into the box marked "new wave po. It is unfair, however, to see them compared to Joe Jackson, when the Sports were sounding like this some time before Jackson really got going

The Sports were a popular Australian rock group that performed and recorded between 1976 and 1981. Based in Melbourne, Victoria, the group released a number of successful singles and albums. The Sports were formed in 1976 by Stephen Cummings who was the singer of Melbourne rockabilly group, The Pelaco Brothers, (which comprised Cummings, Joe Camilleri, Peter Lillie and Johnny Topper). Cummings and ex-The Pelaco Brothers bandmate Ed Bates, with Robert Glover (ex-Myriad) on bass guitar, Jim Niven on piano (ex-The Captain Matchbox Whoopee Band) and Paul Hitchins on drums. Their early sets contained covers of Chuck Berry, Billy Emerson, Don Covay, Company Caine and Graham Parker. Saw Stephen Cummins many times in the 80's, Patch of Blue was a great album,, under rated talent Catchy tune. Needs more attention, but stands as a true, abiding masterpiece.
The album peaked at number 9 on the Australian Kent Music Report and was certified gold. In 2010, the album was listed at number 51 on the 100 Best Australian Albums.
