La Calisto is an opera by Francesco Cavalli from a libretto by Giovanni Faustini based on the mythological story of Callisto. The opera received its first performance on 28 November 1651 at the Teatro Sant 'Apollinare, Venice, where it drew limited audiences for its run of eleven performances. In the twentieth century it was successfully revived. The libretto was published in 1651 by Giuliani and Batti.

Cavalli and Jacobs at their best. La Calisto is such a great masterpiece that I can't understand why it's not better known, it's a delicious comedy about a lusty Jupiter in love with la Calisto a novice of the cult of Minerva. The music is exquisite, the performance admirable. If you want to investigate post Monteverdi opera, start here. You will certainly enjoy the sensuous Calisto of Maria Bayo, and a tour-de-force performance from Marcello Lippi singing as baritone (when roaming as Jupiter) and countertenor (when impersonating Minerva to seduce Calisto).

Cavalli was the leading composer of opera in Venice during the 1650s, and Calisto (which premiered in November 1651) finds him at the height of his powers.
