Welcome doesn't sound any more like Abraxas than Caravanserai did, though; it's just more d. I think Welcome is a patchy attempt to have too much at once. What I hear is Santana trying to take the jazz influences and spiritual atmosphere of Caravanserei and Love Devotion Surrender, smoothing out almost every edge and then tossing in some lite funk and soul - as well as hordes of guest musicians and even strings - to make an album that, theoretically, would taste good yet be good for you at the same time. Unfortunately, Welcome strikes me as not doing either thing.

Santana is the debut studio album by American Latin rock band Santana. It was released on August 30, 1969. Over half of the album's length is composed of instrumental music, recorded by what was originally a purely free-form jam band.

Welcome sold worse than its predecessor, but nevertheless reached number 25 in 1973 on the Billboard charts for albums and ultimately a gold status. titles Flame Sky and Welcome.

Welcome is Santana's Fifth studio recording album; Nothing like Santana I, Abraxas or Santana III; yet a pure state of art (Latin Jazz Rock fusion) musical release. After his great success in his first 3 releases, Santana begins to discover new musical routes hand in hand with the Great guitarist John Mc Laughlin. Like the band's previous album "Caravanserai", there is a heavy jazz influence. Santana and Shrieve were both listening to a lot of Miles Davis, John Coltrane and John McLaughlin at the time, and you can hear those influences on the record. As well as the instrumental tracks, there are also some great songs on the record.

A great Santana album created during the apex of his "jazz" phase. You get it all here folks pop rock, latin influences such as Brazilian(Flora Purim on a track now THATS worth a purchase alone!), African and of course jazz. Melodies abound and the interplay of Tom Coster's Hammond and Rhodes playing with Carlos's guitar playing feels loose and free.First time I heard the opener instrumental track with cinematic like Mellotron THAT was what made the purchase for me. The remastered cd sound's great with less mud and nice high end/middle frequency dynamics. An all around testament to the power and the vision of not only Carlos's musical vision but the tiresome contribution of his band.
