For What It's Worth (Stop, Hey What's That Sound)" (often referred to as simply "For What It's Worth") is a song written by Stephen Stills. Performed by Buffalo Springfield, it was recorded on December 5, 1966; released as a single on Atco Records on December 23, 1966; and peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It was later added to the March 1967 second pressing of their first album, Buffalo Springfield. The title was added after the song was written, and does not appear in the lyrics.
For What It’s Worth Lyrics. There's something happening here But what it is ain't exactly clear There's a man with a gun over there Telling me I got to beware. Recorded by Buffalo Springfield as a single, it was eventually released in 1967 on their self-titled album. Buffalo Springfield was the house band for LA’s famous Whiskey A Go Go during the time of the riots, which led Stephen Stills to pen the song. Much has been written about the song; one of the best sources of information is Reason to Rock.

It’s so open that it’s brand new today. The main hook, ‘Everybody look what’s going down’ – you can apply that, to say, the current election. The song was also added into new pressings of the band’s first album, replacing another Stills original, Baby Don’t Scold Me. Rush’s Alex Lifeson recalls first hearing the song while driving in the family car in the Toronto suburbs. I’m not sure if it was the first time I heard it, but I clearly remember driving with my dad and wearing blue granny glasses, which I thought were so cool, Lifeson says. It was a sunny day, and I put the radio on and ‘For What It’s Worth’ came on. I still recall feeling so moved by that song.
