A lumbering, slow-burn intro is worth the wait as Crown Larks launch into an unexpectedly tight groove, smearing healthy dollops of saxophone over an energetic percussion attack that reframes the preceding skronk as a m palate cleanser. In an admirable display of patience they have waited until now to unleash their debut long-player. Both the band’s energy and its intricate arrangements blossom in Blood Dancer, its debut full-length, the increasingly rare album of unique-but-unified pieces best experienced as a whole journey. Each song can stand on its own, but only the whole captures the band’s intensity and imagination. Almost wholly live-tracked, the record is a mosaic of sounds that reflects a live show full of instrument switching and live looping.

So I get Crown Larks’ Blood Dancer LP in the mail and it looks great, sort of like an old Shearing Pinx record jacket. And it hits me: What if these guys suck? Please don’t let them suck, please don’t let them suck because so many of these indie-rock bands that approach me cold seem strangely unaware of what it is I do here at TMT (which is play audio detective on a small scale for the limited-run crowd)
