Ryuichi Sakamoto (坂本 龍一 Sakamoto Ryūichi, born January 17, 1952) (Japanese pronunciation: ) is a Japanese composer, singer, songwriter, record producer, activist, and actor who has pursued a diverse range of styles as a solo artist and as a member of Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO). BTTB - "back to the basics" - was the composer's 14th studio album, an intimate collection of brief solo piano compositions that was first released in Japan in 1998. At the time he released the placid suite, Sakamoto was a long-established luminary, an immensely prolific and celebrated musician who'd won a BAFTA for his score to Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence (in which he also co-starred, along with David Bowie), an Oscar for his score to The Last Emperor and a Golden Globe for his score to The.

In a departure from his more electronically amplified works, composer and pianist Ryuichi Sakamoto's BTTB stands as a sometimes contemplative, a periodically nostalgic, and an often new age-sounding acoustic piano album. At the time that Sakamoto began composing for BTTB, he thought that a CD of piano music felt right, though he was not sure of what kind of styles he wanted to play around with. Instead of settling on one or two styles, the renowned pianist and composer experimented with several.

In anticipation of the release, Sakamoto has dropped a new music video for "energy flow," a hit track from the single "Ura BTTB," released in 1999, which became somewhat of a social phenomenon in Japan and sold over a million copies.

Beauty (Ryuichi Sakamoto album). Beauty is the eighth solo studio album by Japanese musician Ryuichi Sakamoto. Both a Japanese and an international version were released by Virgin Records in 1989 and 1990, respectively.

Ryuichi Sakamoto has nothing to prove. He didn’t 20 years ago, either. In 1999, the Japanese composer boasted a sprawling, diverse body of work that would leave any artist envious. The result was BTTB, an acronym for ‘Back to the Basics. The album is now being revived for its 20th anniversary and compiling tracks from both its original version in Japan as well as the international release. As the name implies, BTTB finds Sakamoto limiting himself in his resources. Though Sakamoto is the sole performer, alone at his piano, the recordings find him at his inventive. He revels in the limitations and the recordings do well to exemplify some of the composer’s greatest strengths.
