Perhaps the best super audio orchestral sound today is coming out of the Concertgebouw Amsterdam where RCO Live is recording performances by Mariss Jansons and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra that sound more real than real. The balance, the blend, the depth, the detail, the sense of space and time, the sense of immediacy and honesty all make these recordings among the most successful ever made.
Album · 2005 · 18 Songs. Symphonic Dances, Op. 45: III. Lento assai (Live). 18 Songs, 1 Hour 9 Minutes. Released: 11 Jan 2005.
Stravinsky’s Petrushka was performed to great public acclaim and recorded in the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam on 29 and 31 October 2004, whilst Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances were recorded later that same year on 22, 23 and 25 December. From the clear and transparent orchestral sound in Stravinsky’s Petrushka to the full glory of the symphony orchestra in the Rachmaninoff, Mariss Jansons and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra demonstrate once again the immense artistic heights attained by this unique collaboration between conductor and orchestra. Emily Beynon, flute Frits Damrow, trumpet Jeroen.

The Symphonic Dances, Op. 45, is an orchestral suite in three movements. Completed in 1940, it is Sergei Rachmaninoff's last composition. The Symphonic Dances allowed him to indulge in a nostalgia for the Russia he had known, much as he had done in the Third Symphony, as well as to effectively sum up his lifelong fascination with ecclesiastical chants. In the first dance, he quotes the opening theme of his First Symphony, itself derived from motifs characteristic of Russian church music.
