Battalions of Fear is an average speed metal album. Granted, average speed metal is thoroughly entertaining, more so than the averages of many other genres. However one can't help but wonder if it would kill the band to play just one song at a different speed for longer than a few seconds. They released two demos between 1985 and 1986 called "Symphonies of Doom" and "Battalions of Fear" and changed their name to Blind Guardian for avoiding any speculations concerning the implication of the band into satanism. They released their first album in 1988, "Battalions of Fear", which is a compilation of re-recorded demo songs, with several new ones such as "Guardian of the Blind", "The Martyr" and the instrumental "By the Gates of Moria".
