When Durand Jones & the Indications released their self-titled debut album in 2016, it didn’t take long for them to notice that fans were gravitating to a particular track: Is It Any Wonder, a lolling, pretty soul ballad, with sharp rim-shots puncturing long lines of prepubescent falsetto from drummer Aaron Frazer. The last was a lot of experimentation, then we had enough tracks, Frazer says. This was more a vision: We moved towards the vocal-group sound.
Such range and care throughout American Love Call cement Durand Jones and the Indications' place in modern music-as artists working with today and yesterday in a way that shows a true understanding of both. American Love Call is not an album that any fans of retro-soul or RnB should miss. Every song hits and hits differently. Morning in America is a smooth groovy intro to the album with an enjoyable bass and electric guitar performance, and the vocals blend so well with the instrumental. Creating a sweet soulful song. My personal favourite, "Sea Gets Hotter", is this carefree anthem, with a parasitic chorus that will be in my head for the year.
True Love Durand Jones & the Indications aren’t looking backwards. Helmed by foil vocalists in Durand Jones and drummer Aaron Frazer, the Indications conjure the dynamism of Jackie Wilson, Curtis Mayfield, AND the Impressions. Even with an aesthetic steeped in the golden, strings-infused dreaminess of early ‘70s soul, the Indications’ sophomore LP, American Love Call, is planted firmly in the present, with the urgency of this moment in time.
American Love Call feels like an anthropological report, social forecast and escape all at once. Like so many other albums of this moment, it’s an artist’s (or in this case, artists’) attempt to make sense of what’s happening in our country, our world and in their own lives.
