Number Ones is a greatest hits album by American singer Michael Jackson. It was released on November 18, 2003 by Epic Records. Number Ones was Jackson's first proper compilation album with Epic Records, after the release of the first disc of HIStory in 1995 (and after the re-release of that disc as a single album titled Greatest Hits: HIStory, Volume I in 2001). The album included Jackson singles that reportedly reached number 1 in charts around the world.

Number Ones is Michael Jackson’s 2003 greatest hits compilation album, his first under Epic Records (owned and operated by Sony Entertainent). It featured all of Michael’s chart-topping songs throughout his career at that point ( Thriller and Smooth Criminal only went outside America) in addition to the bonus track Break of Dawn from his preceding studio album, Invincible and the exclusive, R. Kelly-written One More Chance, which would be the last new material officially released during The King of Pop’s.

There are only two songs from his first major studio album, and in my opinion, one of his strongest in terms of lyrics, general sound and production. I'm, of course, referring to Off the Wall. If the set had included at least 'She's Out of My Life', it would've been far more enjoyable.

Michael Jackson’s 2003 compilation, ‘Number Ones’, is exactly what it says it is, all of the superstars hits that reached the number one spot in either American or European charts. Simple.Of course, as is always the case with compilations, there are a hell of a lot of songs missing from this, which may not fit the criteria, but Jackson’s body of work includes so many absolutely unforgettable songs, that in all honesty, a one-disc album like this just doesn’t really do the man justice. But with that said, I guess that’s what the appeal of this album is; trying to get all the hits on one disc. Tailor-made for the casual listener, ‘Number Ones’ may not really please die-hard fans, especially since most of the songs are edited down to squeeze in as many as possible. But for the casual fan, this basically covers all the main hits as a solo artist. From his early hits such as ‘Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough’, ‘Billie Jean’, ‘Beat It’, ‘Thriller’ and ‘Bad’, to his 90’s material like ‘The Way You Make Me Feel’ (one of the coolest songs ever!), ‘Smooth Criminal’, ‘Black and White’ and ‘Earth Song’, to his later hits such as ‘Blood on the Dance Floor’ and ‘You Rock My World’, despite the edits and absence of other material, this is still a fantastic set of tracks. Michael Jackson’s music is universally revered, and each song here still sounds as fresh and groundbreaking today as it did when it was released, no matter how many times you’ve heard it on the radio. However, once again I must clarify, that this may not appeal to many die-hard fanatics, but for the casual Jackson fan looking for something quick and digestible, ‘Number Ones’ is spot on.
