I'm no Getz expert but I do know he didn't record in this format very often, especially when one sees almost no standards are in this recording. And the results are quite good. After Dave Brubeck's quartet broke up in 1967, Mulligan began appearing regularly with Brubeck as the "Gerry Mulligan, Dave Brubeck Quartet" through 1973. Thereafter, Mulligan and Brubeck would work together sporadically until the final year of Mulligan's life. In 1971, Mulligan created his most significant work for big band in over a decade, for the album The Age of Steam. Mulligan, like many jazz musicians of his era, occasionally recorded with strings. Dates included 1957 recordings with Vinnie Burke's String Jazz Quartet, a 1959 orchestra album with André Previn and a 1965 album of the Gerry Mulligan Quintet and Strings. In 1974, Mulligan collaborated with Argentine tango musician Ástor Piazzolla. While in Milan for the recording sessions, Mulligan met his future wife, Countess Franca Rota Borghini Baldovinetti, a freelance photojournalist and reporter.

The Dave Brubeck Quartet: Time Out (Columbia, 1959). California-born pianist Dave Brubeck had a penchant for playing music in unusual and unorthodox meters, and his quartet’s most famous song was this album’s title cut. An infectious number written in 5/4 time, ‘Take Five’ became a hit single in 1960 and was written by Brubeck’s alto saxophonist, Paul Desmond, initially as a vehicle to showcase the quartet’s drummer, Joe Morello. A rewarding summit of jazz giants. Key cut: ‘Limbo Jazz’. Getz/Gilberto was the album that not only launched the solo career of singer Astrud Gilberto but also helped to put the Brazilian bossa nova phenomenon on the world stage. Tenor saxophonist Stan Getz had already delved into Brazilian music via his 1962 collaboration with guitarist Charlie Byrd on the album Jazz Samba, but here he sought authenticity by hooking up with vocalist/guitarist João Gilberto.

"With all of the Stan Gtez recordings that ARE in print, it's always a shame when you come across one that's pretty unique in an artists's cannon that is not available to the public. I'm no Getz expert but I do know he didn't record in this format very often, especially when one sees almost no standards are in this recording. And the results are quite good. I can't imagine any fan or collector of Getz' works NOT having this one to be honest. Recorded at Ronnie Scott's Club in London on 3 days in March 1971, the band consists of Getz-Tenor Sax along with a trio of Eddy Louiss on Organ, Electric Guitarist Rene Thomas, and Drummer Bernard Lubat. None of the tunes will be familar here except for Benny Golson's "I Remember Clifford". The rest of the tracks are mostly originals by Eddy Louiss or Rene Thomas with one track each from outside composers Albert Mangelsdorf and Bronislau Kaper-both of whom I believe to be European Jazz musicians themselves (I do know of Mangelsdorf's work anyway). The recording quality is quite good and Getz (and indeed the entire band) seem to really be having fun. What more could you want? Personally I think there are too few recordins of jazz organ out there anyway-especially ones which aren't completley based on blues. So this one really does the trick for me-as much for the wonderful band as for Stan Getz himself.. If it comes into print again, do try and pick it up!!"
