Nefertiti is a studio album by American jazz musician Miles Davis, released in March 1968. Recorded on June 7, June 22–23 and July 19, 1967, at Columbia's 30th Street Studio, the album was Davis' last fully acoustic album. Davis himself did not contribute any compositions, which were mostly written by Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter.
In June and July, he returned to the studio with his quintet six times, continually fascinated by Wayne Shorter’s themes, which followed one another like a cortege of lofty divinities leaving their temple for a nocturnal procession.
Recorded in two days in the summer of 1967 Nefertiti is Miles Davis' last fully acoustic album, with no compositions from Miles himself. Most tracks are written by Wayne Shorter & Herbie Hancock. Best known for its unusual title track, where the horns keep repeating the melody and the rhythm section improvises (in stead of the other way around). Whilst an acoustic album, it does signals Miles' transition from Bop to Jazz Fusion; a hint at the next albums Miles in the Sky and the critically acclaimed In A Silent Way. The fourth album by Miles Davis's Second Great Quintet, Nefertiti, is best known for the unusual title track, on which the horn section repeats the melody numerous times without individual solos while the rhythm section improvises underneath, reversing the traditional role of a rhythm section Shortly after this album, Hancock recorded a different version of "Riot" for his 1968 album Speak Like a Child.
