But I’d say they’re more like pop hot, if that makes any sense. Even Sexercize - obviously it’s a memorable title. Getting it just right sounds like a particularly grueling process, particularly with Kiss Me Once. KM: It is. You just think, Come on - they’re all great. Just put all of them together. There are some people I trust who’d make their own list, and some of them were completely different. And it’s like, really? That song from 11 months ago that we’d all almost forgotten about has suddenly come back into the running.
With her usual diva flair, Kylie Minogue soars high on Kiss Me Once, an album that’s both sonically au courant and firmly rooted in her dance-princess past. For her 12th studio album, the Australian pop chanteuse enlists a bevy of A-list producers, including Pharrell Williams (fresh off his success with Daft Punk), Ariel Rechtshaid (Haim), and the electronica duo MNDR. The whoosh and throb of techno anthems like Into the Blue and Fine achieve a grandeur that matches their self-empowering lyrics.

It must be considered at least a partial success, being both more engaging and more characterful than either X or Aphrodite; but it remains nevertheless an incremental improvement, rather than a substantial overhaul. But lumbering drums weigh down the erotic anticipation of Kiss Me Once, and If Only is a bit of a mess, although at least here the swaddling, densely layered synth arrangement does offer an apt musical metaphor for the theme of inextricable entanglement.

But if her 12th album sounds a lot like contemporary pop, that’s probably just because a lot of contemporary pop bears resemblance to the effervescent club music that Minogue’s been making since the Eighties. A cheesy jam called Sexercize and an Enrique Iglesias duet aside, most of the production has a respect-the-goddess quality befitting an icon of her status.
