This is another criminally underrated record. It's in the Coltrane/Spiritual realm. Most of the lp is free jazz but the track Valley of All Brothers is deep and amazing. Reply Notify me Helpful.

Kenny Gill the pianist was a wildly unknown figure in free/spiritual jazz. Very few details are known about him outside those provided by his highly rare "What Was, What Is, What Will Be" LP, a 1970 release for the surprisingly well-distributed Warner Bros.

I'm not a huge jazz aficionado. I just have a special interest in the Raccoon label catalog. That's why I bought this album. However, I sat down and took a listen to this record and it's great. It definitely expanded my views on musical boundaries and how far you can stretch them and still stay listenable. In Josh Rosenthal's excellent book Record Store of the Mind he said the Youngbloods had promised Gill a second album but their deal with Warner Brothers (which included the Raccoon label) was near an end. They had to tell Gill the second album would not happen. He apparently wasn't happy and took off shortly after he heard the news. According to his Discogs profile he recorded a couple of albums with an artist named Amy Sheffer during the 80's. I'm not sure if he has done anything else since then. Here's hoping he is still making music somewhere.
