Conductor Lehman Engel, who had an erratic sense of tempo himself, ignored Nelson Eddy's modest appeal that Engel should establish the beat for each song. Instead, he tried to follow Eddy in the first song or two, as the poor baritone went slower and slower, but the idea of retakes was not in the budget. My first choice would definitely be the MCA reissue of Decca's "Original New York Cast" performances, which integrates the best-selling 1943 album with the additional songs that appeared on the elusive Volume 2, accompanied by a previously unpublished take of "Pore Jud Is Daid" in uncut form. That MCA album, incidentally, is one of the few to include the hoedown music between choruses of "The Farmer and the Cowman"-reminding us that Columbia's 1952 recording is neither complete (as originally advertised) nor the most effectively sung.
Lehman Engel was an American composer and conductor of plays, television, and film. He also conducted many Broadway musicals, both on stage and on records. Lehman Engel worked in a variety of positions on television specials. The Oklahoma! album used Robert Russell Bennett's original orchestrations and starred Nelson Eddy as the cowboy Curly. For RCA Victor, Engel conducted studio recordings of Carousel in 1955 (with Robert Merrill as Billy Bigelow, Patrice Munsel as Julie Jordan, and Florence Henderson as Carrie); and Show Boat in 1956 (with a very politically incorrect Merrill singing the roles of both Ravenal and the black stevedore Joe, Ms. Munsel as Magnolia, and Rise Stevens as Julie La Verne).

Lehman Engel (born September 14, 1910, Jackson, Mississippi; died August 29, 1982, New York City) was an American composer and conductor of Broadway musicals, television and film. Engel worked in a variety of positions on television specials. He was composer and conductor of the music for the famed 1954 television production of Shakespeare's Macbeth, starring Maurice Evans and Judith Anderson, but did not work on the 1960 remake starring the same two actors
