Boult recorded the Vaughan Williams Symphonies for Decca in the 1950s with the composer present - much praised performances which have been in the catalogues pretty well ever since. His HMV/EMI recordings from the late 60s and early 70s present essentially the same approach with perhaps slightly less urgency and slightly more reflectiveness. Vaughan Williams considered Boult the perfect interpreter of his music, and said so frequently. This disc is part of Boult's second series, the one for EMI recorded from 1967 to 1972 to take advantage of the considerable advances in sound since his early 50's Decca recordings.

A London Symphony is the second symphony composed by Ralph Vaughan Williams. The work is sometimes referred to as Symphony No. 2, though it was not designated as such by the composer. First performed in 1914, the four-movement symphony was lost, reconstructed and later modified by Vaughan Williams. The work is scored for: Woodwinds: three flutes (the third doubling piccolo), two oboes, cor anglais, two clarinets, bass clarinet, two bassoons, contrabassoon.
