Scorpio Rising was a muddy, disinterested, and unfocused slog of an album that showed that Prong desperately needed to whip themselves back into shape. Musically, what you end up with is very substandard. One of the most prominent features of Scorpio Rising is its very muddled, down-tuned guitar tone that can deliver some moments of heaviness but isn’t utilized well throughout most of this album. Come to think of it, Scorpio Rising is a stunted Prong album. The grooves are here, but they pack far less punch and far less aggression or attitude than before, the songs often do only enough to get by, Tommy Victor sounds disinterested on some songs, and despite how much louder everything is, the anger doesn’t cut deep here.

The American metal band Prong was founded in the mid-eighties. The main band member was and is the lead vocalist and guitarist Tommy Victor, who worked as a sound engineer in the famous New York underground rock club CBGB and the only member of the first hour the many line-up survived. Prong makes a mix of various metal styles (hardcore, industrial, trash) and with an emphasis on the guitar riffs. That yielded a few classics in the genre, with the most famous number Snap Your Fingers, Snap Your Neck from the album Cleansing (1994). In 1996 the band fell after the less successful album Rude Awakening apart and for a long time nothing of Prong, until 2002 the live album 100% Live appeared. Prong proved to exist, what is proven once again with the new album Scorpio Rising (2003). Again is Prong (with bassist and drummer this time Than Laudo Monte Pittman) bright and aggressive and it is the pruning hard riffs. This melodic can extract that can be heard in Avoid Promises, perhaps the most catchy number.

Initially, I was disappointed with this album. However, after listening a few more times, it really grew on me. I recommend this album, especially for any Prong fan.
