Jazz fusion (also known as fusion) is a music genre that developed in the late 1960s when musicians combined jazz harmony and improvisation with rock music, funk, and rhythm and blues. Electric guitars, amplifiers, and keyboards that were popular in rock and roll started to be used by jazz musicians, particularly those who had grown up listening to rock and roll.

At the same time, some rock artists began adding jazz elements to their music. Fusion has gone on to often include world music and other elements. At its best, fusion music is often considered to be one of the most inventive, original and virtuosic musical genres. In a sense, the jazz supergroup heard on the album - saxist Joshua Redman, cornetist Ron Miles, bassist Scott Colley and drummer Brian Blade - is paying tribute to a tribute: Old and New Dreams, a quartet of Coleman associates, including Redman’s father Dewey, that performed music written and inspired by their trailblazing maestro in the Seventies and Eighties. From 2000 through 2013, drummer-composer Jim Black melded exploratory jazz and atmospheric rock on a brilliant series of albums with his group Alasnoaxis. This year, some of those ideas resurfaced on this striking and ultimately unclassifiable set, a collaboration with keyboardist JP Schlegelmilch and guitarist Jonathan Goldberger, who split compositional duties.

In Terms of Jazz rock, it Was the Perfect Storm. Miles met and married the 20 years younger Betty Mabry, who in turn turned him on to new styles of music like Sly And the Family Stone, and Jimi Hendrix. Davis sought out younger band mates to tutor like drummer Tony Williams, who for my money was the greatest drummer who ever lived. Guitarist John McLaughlin, Bassist Dave Holland, and Keyboardists Larry Young, Chick Corea and Joe Zawinul all provided an open minded approach to fusions of many diverse musics. Though many others joined the two before this, even Davis' own In a Silent Way from the year before moved in this direction. But unlike Bitches Brew, that album was subtle and ethereal.

John Stevens’ Away - Somewhere In Between (1976). A pioneer of the UK’s mid-60s free jazz scene, drummer John Stevens’ rock-orientated band boasted both electric and acoustic bass. Steve Hillage was a fan and had them as the support act for his L tour. Turning Point - Creatures Of The Night (1977).
