Use Aram Bajakian's there were flowers also in hell to kick off your next party. Put on 'Texas Cannonball' and watch as your guests begin to dance. A little later in the tune they may be tempted to get stoned, but they'll soon be dancing again, albeit perhaps just a little slower. In fact, your guests won't even notice the seque into the next track. The gorgeous 'Loutone' picks up on the previous song's theme and then proceeds to deconstruct it into a buzzing, shimmering, and ultimately blazing tribute to Lou Reed. The band on this record includes bassist Shahzad Ismaily from Ceramic Dog and drummer Jerome Jennings. That's a nice an open term for the music - it's downtown New York, it's blues, it's rock, it's guitar, it's free-jazz, and it's quite enjoyable.

Few guitarists cover as much territory, both stylistically and literally, as Aram Bajakian. Not long ago the Queens-based guitarist found himself copping James Hetfield riffs for the late Lou Reed, playing in Freddie Green mode with singer/pianist Diana Krall, and improvising on works by maverick composer John Zorn-all in the same week. What did you set out to do with there were flowers also in hell? I wanted a record that wasn’t just about having great tone and amazing songs and solos. I wanted a record that really expressed my day-to-day life in Queens.

What to expect when Aram Bajakian puts out a new album? While fans of the shape-shifting guitarist should know better than to be surprised, little of Bajakian’s work-whether with his groups Kef and Abraxas or on recent albums like there were flowers also in hell, music inspired by the color of pomegranates, or Dálava-predicts the direction he takes on Dolphy Formations, self-released late last year

Guitarist Aram Bajakian could have taken Vancouver by storm. Having moved to town at the tail end of a Diana Krall tour that found him playing soft-seaters around the globe, he might have parlayed his connections to jazz royalty into some high-profile headlining gigs. He’s already issued two fine recordings this year, the groundbreaking, folk-inspired Dálava and the beguilingly bluesy there were flowers also in hell. In addition to Reed and Krall, he’s also toured and recorded with a long list of luminaries, including saxophonist, composer, and Tzadik label boss John Zorn. Even as a sophomore in high school, when he sneaked into a university-level master class with Wynton Marsalis, he was courting praise-as he recalls in a candid, in-person interview with the Georgia Straight.
