Vinnie Caruana has played a lot of acoustic shows over the past decade, and every one of those performances can be heard in City By The Sea, his masterful new six-song acoustic EP. Packed with more of Caruana’s ever-cutting lyrical prowess and a gritty, muscular vocal performance that never wavers, the collection is arguably his strongest release since I Am The Avalanche’s defining and criminally underrated 2005 self-titled debut. Vinnie Caruana’s debut EP, City By The Sea, finds him very adeptly planting roots in the latter category. Better known (for now) as former frontman of pop-punkers The Movielife and currently heading up I Am The Avalanche and Peace’d Out, Caruana’s solo EP has little in common with his better known, band-oriented projects. It took until the second time through City By The Sea before I really grasped what Caruana was shooting for. I left the album on repeat for a full day in my office thereafter, and it never got old. Catchy and upbeat when it had to be, always engaging and compelling; the signs of brightness on the horizon in Caruana’s budding solo career.

The name Vinnie Caruana might not immediately ring a bell with you but you’ve no doubt heard his vocals before in either The Movielife, I Am The Avalanche or recently in Peace’d Ou. On City By The Sea he’s going at it acoustically and does so pretty good. You can definitely still hear the punkrocker in Caruana’s gritty vocals and the relatively straight-forward arrangements but the songs on here show a much more mellow side of the man. The songs are decent enough (better than Joey Cape’s acoustic material even if that isn’t saying much) but I still prefer to hear him belt out another singalong chorus while backed up by loud as fuck guitars.
