Reek of Putrefaction is one of those albums classed as legendary or influential due to its proximity to the start of a specific genre or style, or one that’s been copied so widely that the original idea is almost lost within reams of copyists and wannabes. Carcass would later create some essential death metal cuts, such as Symphonies of Sickness and Necroticism, but their debut reeked of grind, and ugly grind as it was. Its sound is truly horrifying, a cauldron of gurgled growls and screams, played over a raw, hurtling soundtrack of grinding riffs and thundering blastbeats.

Carcass’ grind style revealed an irony: the frailty of humanity & the absurdity of our condition.

Carcass's debut Reek of Putrefaction was pretty ahead of its time and an extremely important album for grind music. I'm pretty sure some of my personal favourite death/grind and goregrind bands wouldn't be playing the music they play without this album, along with their next album Symphonies of Sickness. The vocals on this album are a much rawer form of the trio of Jeff Walker, Bill Steer, and Ken Owen. Ken’s pitch-shifted parts are much more out of control and sound odd, probably because of the terrible production. Bill sounds pretty much the same as he usually does. He also seems to sing more on this release, it kind of seems like he is the lead vocalist on this album where Jeff seems to take over lead on later albums. Jeff Walker’s highs are not nearly as perfected as they are on Symphonies. He still has his vomit-ish noises he does so well but they are much more random on this album.

Reek of Putrefaction is a great album. However the 2008 reissue is unlistenable. I will say the demo is excellent and essential and sounds fine, but the actual album is trash. Go for an earlier cd press, save yourself a headache. They could have remixed the album to bring out the instuments more. The remaster just makes this sound a little louder. Anyway the demo on here, that originally was released before the album is a great mix and is heavier sounding, glad they included that on the remaster.
