Ruggero Raimondi/Placido Domingo/Ryland Davies/Shirley Verrett/Giovanni Foiani/Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden/Carlo Maria Giulini Verdi: Don Carlo (1886 Modena Five-Act Version), Act 4 Scene 2: "Mio Carlo, a te la spada io rendo" (Filippo, Don Carlo, Conte di Lerma, Eboli, L'Inquisitore, I Grandi di Spagna, Il Popolo).

Don Carlos is Verdi's most problematic opera. There are three basic versions of the opera but many permutations of the basic three. The three versions are: 1) the original Paris version in five-act to a French text; 2) the revised four-act version in Italian; and 3) the revised five-act version in Italian. There also exists much material omitted either before or just after the first Paris production. Shirley Verrett is a superb Eboli. This was one of her great roles for it showed her great versatility. From the vocal display of the Veil Song to the drama and power of "O don fatale" she has everything the role demands. Carlo Maria Giulini conducted a famous revival of five-act version of Don Carlos at Covent Garden in 1959 and this was beginning of more regular use of the five-act score. Giulini knows exactly what he wants from his singers and for the most part they give him their best.

Verdi: Don Carlos, Act 2 - Scène et Romance: "Le Roi!. by Leo Nucci & Ruggero Raimondi & Katia Ricciarelli & Ann Murray & Coro del Teatro alla Scala di Milano & Orchestra del Teatro alla Scala di Milano & Claudio Abbado. Some conductors and most modern productions choose the abridged version by Verdi. However, for me at least, the Fontainbleau Act is essential to the opera as a whole. For the complete versions, Domingo has at least three famous recordings: first one on CD under Giulini, with Caballe, Verrett, Milnes, Raimondi, Ghiaurov and others. Then a DVD version with Freni, Bumbry, Ghiaurov and others. This third set is on CD under Abbado and again Raimondi, but this time, with Katia Ricciarelli as Elisabetta, and this is the complete French version.
