This album features a most unusual session. Veteran blues singer Joe Turner and his usual rhythm section of the mid-'70s (which includes guitarist Pee Wee Crayton) are joined by four notable trumpeters: Dizzy Gillespie, Roy Eldridge, Harry "Sweets" Edison, and Clark Terry. On three blues (including the 15-minute "I Know You Love Me Baby") and "Tain't Nobody's Bizness If I Do," the group stretches out with each of the trumpeters getting ample solo space.

In an interview, Jon Hendricks asked Dizzy Gillespie to demonstrate the evolution of styles by singing a riff as Louis Armstrong would sing it, then as how Roy Eldridge would sing it, and finally how Dizzy would sing it. Dizzy replied with a simple rhythmic idea from Louis, an intense, agitated version for Roy and then an arhythmic flurry of fast notes for himself.

The Trumpet Kings Meet Joe Turner (Remastered). While I love Big Joe's vocals, it's the horn players who make this album special. Indeed, some of the best musicians to ever pick up a trumpet are featured, especially Dizzy and Roy Eldridge. Both have added a lot to American music, and the others - Sweets Edison and Clark Terry - are also giants. Edison came up in the Kansas City tradition, playing with Basie earlier in his career as well as backing Billie Holiday on some of her early recordings.
