Performer: Leontyne Price. Orchestra: Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Conductor: Fritz Reiner. Composer: Manuel de Falla, Granados, Albeniz. Audio CD (July 18, 1995). I am an afficiando of Spanish composers and their imitators working in the Spanish style, and personally feel that the Reiner/Chicago combination was the best match of conductor and orchestra to date, so I admit a heavy bias in favor of this recording just because of it's pedigree. The delightful news is the recording lives up to any and all expectations

Leontyne Price is joined by Fritz Reiner conducting the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in performing works by Falla, Albeniz & Granadas including The Three Cornered Hat. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra at its finest, under the impeccable leadership of Fritz Reiner, brings elegance and fire to some of Spain's greatest orchestral music, with Leontyne Price in a volatile performance of El amor brujo
This particular album features the music of Spanish composers de Falla, Albéniz, and Granados with the Chicago Symphony under Fritz Reiner. The orchestra brilliantly captures the sultry, sassy flair of El amor brujo.

Fritz Reiner was one of the foremost conductors of his time. Crowning his long career in Europe and America was the decade from 1954 to 1963 as music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra an illustrious partnership that ranks along such other historical tenures as Karajan's in Berlin, Szell's. In both Pittsburgh and Chicago, Reiner recorded works by his former teacher Bartók, and he was instrumental in convincing Serge Koussevitzky to commission Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra in 1943. His classic 1955 Chicago recording of that masterpiece is among the glories of this new set. Every recording in this new 63-CD set comes from the best re-mastered source. A third have been newly re-mastered from the original tapes.
