They argue its writers regularly recycle plots - which are becoming increasingly incoherent - and the biting satire has paled
Consequently, Britain lost its preeminent position and its empire, succumbing increasingly to foreign competition where Smith’s principles are increasingly making inroads. India and China are two notable examples. The United States, regrettably, seems to be following in England’s footsteps. The government sector is growing by sucking wealth and resources from the private sector. Federal government jobs, according to several recent reports, now pay on average double what the private sector pays. Almost 50 percent of Americans depend on government for their livelihood in one way or another. Why has the United States not been winning its wars? Part of the problem is that the United States has misread some of these conflicts. For example, Vietnam was not so much about democracy versus communism as about nationalism versus colonialism.
But Vancouver has also seen many problems and controversies, and confronted lessons that Portland would do well to study more carefully. Moreover, Vancouver has several crucial (if too easily overlooked) differences from Portland.
Philosophy has lost its way. At one point, it was the queen of the sciences, but the sciences grew up and, like naughty children, came to believe they didn’t need her. Many once thought she was the guide to life, rivaling religion but offering a more rational way. However, philosophy could not match the emotional power of the offer of salvation. Then philosophy fell in love with physics and tried to imitate the precision of its inquiry. But it was incapable of discovering a single new fact.
