Memphis is the seventeenth studio album by American singer-songwriter Boz Scaggs. It was Scaggs's first solo release since 2008's Speak Low. The album was released on March 5, 2013, by 429 Records. The album has debuted on Billboard 200 at No. 17, and has sold 90,000 copies in the US as of March 2015.

Boz Scaggs will release MEMPHIS, his first album of new studio material in five years, on March 5th. Between touring and his work with Donald Fagen and Michael McDonald in the Dukes Of September in recent years, Scaggs hasn’t had much time in the studio, hence the gap between albums. Thankfully, the multi-platinum singer-songwriter found his new album, MEMPHIS, to be perhaps the most natural collection of his four-decade plus career. It’s one of the easiest projects I’ve ever had. I sang songs that feel entirely comfortable to me, he told Rolling Stone. The album was recorded in Memphis at the legendary Royal Studios, where the late Willie Mitchell crafted the sound during Al Green’s heyday. For Scaggs, who worked with producer Steve Jordan (John Mayer) and a stellar group of musicians, the studio and its history were very much a part of the recording process. That sound is iconic.

Scaggs’ first album in five years looks back on ‘70s southern soul with a dozen songs that adapt to their surroundings. Memphis, the city, is all over ‘Memphis,’ the album, steering the music’s subtle shades in this direction or that while never losing the driving force: Scaggs’ bluesy voice, which is still in top shape. Listen to the way he drops into the music on the opening ‘Gone Baby Gone’ like a soft-speaking ghost who wants to fill you in on his sad, lonely story. At times ‘Memphis’ is so wedded to its old-school design that it doesn’t really have much of a personality. Why listen to Boz Scaggs do Al Green when you can just listen to ‘Call Me’? Over the half-century of his career Scaggs has developed an excellent soul voice and he manages to play an Al Green role without seeming overstretched – no mean feat.
