It also represented a major reversal in the business of popular music. There were no pre-rock & roll counterparts to Sam Phillips, who parlayed a tiny Memphis label with a staff of one into a company whose artists sold millions of records throughout the world.

Marcus chooses Transmission instead of the much more popular Love Will Tear Us Apart, which has become almost a musical rite of passage for certain bands to cover. This was the last single the band released before singer Ian Curtis killed himself. Rock'n'roll has come a long way in the half-century since Elvis first stepped up to the microphone at Sun Studios. At that moment the notion of youth, both as a culture and a demographic, was born; it defines our culture now to a degree that we no longer question. In the transition, rock'n'roll has lost much of its power to shock and to galvanise, has become both fragmented and ubiquitous. There were rock'n'roll records before this one, nearly all of them by black artists, but this is the moment when the embryonic form found its perfect embodiment. 1955 Chuck Berry's 'Maybellene' is released. Maybellene' was Berry's first paean to cars and girls, two of the constants of American rock'n'roll.
