The Second is the second studio album by Canadian-American rock band Steppenwolf, released in October 1968 on ABC Dunhill Records. The album contains one of Steppenwolf's most famous songs, "Magic Carpet Ride". The background of the original ABC LP cover was a shiny "foil", in contrast to later (MCA Records) LP issues and the modern CD sleeve.

Steppenwolf the Second embraces everything from hard rock to psychedelia to blues, and the band is in excellent form, playing very hard and edgy, except on the deliberately lyrical, reflective "Spiritual Fantasy," a rare acoustic number for the group. Much more to the point of the group was the single "Magic Carpet Ride," the ultimate psychedelic pop dance number of the decade, and the marijuana anthem "Don't Step on the Grass, Sam," the pounding "28," and the album-opener "Faster Than the Speed of Life. The playing was as good as the first album, and though there's nothing quite comparable to "Born to Be Wild" here in terms of cultural impact, the level of the surrounding numbers is higher.

Steppenwolf, their debut album, is a fantastic album. It was recorded on basic equipment and for little money, but stands the test of time beautifully. It's loud and raw and captures the energy of the young band perfectly. Everyone has heard Born to be Wild, a song written by the band's ex-guitarist Dennis Edmonton (aka Mars Bonfire). Overall, 'The Second' is a slightly weaker album than the debut album. But that's being slightly picky. They're both very strong albums that capture the band at its creative peak. Steppenwolf were so much more than Born to be Wild!!
