Ahhh... Hit Box 8. The memories this one brings... it came right after the rather "par for the course" Hit Box 6 and 7, which felt more like "service releases" that just had to be released just to keep the series up-to-date, and before the two-disk epic rave masterpiece that was to be Hit Box 9.Hit Box 8 is a kind of "bridge between the two worlds" or the "Joker" of the series: it definitively has its fair share of pure Euro (2 Unlimited, Maxx, Whigfield, E-Rotic, Fun Factory, Pizzaman, etc.) and if you have the LP version, that's mostly what you'll be getting, but there are some extra surprises in store for the CD version.BUT, what's this weird track #4? Yup, it's the controversial "Excalibur" by F.C.B., with the infamous samples from Carmina Burana. I admit I was puzzled when I heard this the first time...and it's a good reason for collecting Hit Box 8, even the LP version. Overall, after you'll be done listening to the entire compilation (up to track 12), you'll certainly find yourself in a good mood, as the overall tone is pleasant. Other than track #4 ("Excalibur") you'll find a couple of rare tracks like "I Can Fly" and "Born To Be Alive" which exist on literally less than a handful of other compilations, marking Hit Box's rarity yet another time, and even if you have "just" the LP version, you can definitively say you got your money's worth for this one.But wait, there's more! What does the CD have to say with those extra tracks? More rarities! Enter "Just Laugh" by Mr. Kinky, "Your Toy" by Ten Minutes, "Paradise Of Love" by Rave Flowers, "Red Martian" by Space Mission and a rave rendition of "Scarborough Fair" by Age Of Passion. These extra tracks add an extra layer of cheerfulness (and a more Rave orientation) to this release, with most of them also classifying as rare tracks, so having the CD version will certainly offer you a different experience than the LP with its extra tracks. You could consider it a small glimpse into what Hit Box 9 was to offer, or even a Hit Box 9, Disc 3...When I only find a couple of tracks annoying in a compilation (Sex On The Streets, Party Time, and maybe Stayin' Alive, but only because I heard it in 100 other compilations ;-) then they definitively did something right.
