It’s also a good example of the Impressions sweetening up a blues arrangement with their vocal harmonies while still retaining enough ‘grit’ to keep it from being too saccharine. The songwriting gets a little repetitive across these two albums, but I still consider these essential listening, especially for fans of Curtis Mayfield.

Mayfield, who had previously written much lighter songs like "Little Young Lover" for The Impressions and "The Monkey Time" for Major Lance, became the musical voice of the civil rights movement with songs like this one and "People Get Ready. Mayfield, who had a deep connection to the church, wrote this as a gospel song. The only thing he did to turn it into a pop song was to change one line, substituting "I've got my strength" for "God gave me strength. Otherwise, the song very easily could be sung in church

Happily I discovered that the 2nd album had some much more interesting cuts with sterling brass arrangements and some truly classy and profound performances. Some of those songs have me thinking I should be delving deeper into the progressive history of this group. I am a big fan of the Impressions and Curtis Mayfield in particular. Getting two great albums of music on one CD does not get any better! Mayfield was a great composer. I love the music, great arrangements and thought-provoking lyrics.
