Oren Ambarchi & Thomas Brinkmann. 1 Song, 1 Hour 17 Minutes. Released: 13 Feb 2012. More By Thomas Brinkmann. See All. Retrospektiv.

Thomas Brinkmann has teamed up with Oren Ambarchi for an album called The Mortimer Trap. Each artist brings a different sensibility to the album. Brinkmann has always occupied the more experimental end of techno, playing around with double-armed turntables and carved vinyl. Ambarchi is more fully couched in the avant-garde, a guitar player and percussionist with numerous releases on the UK institution Touch. They teamed up at the beginning of this year while working with Mika Vainio in Japan. The Mortimer Trap includes one 77-minute track. It will see release on Ambarchi's Black Truffle label, with album artwork by Brinkmann. Tracklist 01. The Mortimer Trap. Black Truffle will release The Mortimer Trap on February 14th, 2012. Label: Black Truffle.

Oren Ambarchi was born in Sydney to an Iraqi Jewish family. Ambarchi has been performing live since 1986. In the late 1980s he played free jazz in Sydney, originally as a drummer. Ambarchi collaborated with t Paul Duncan of Warm Ghost on experimental music projects. Ambarchi begins a series of duo recordings with t Jim O'Rourke, the first one being the acclaimed 'Indeed' in 2011  . 2012) The Mortimer Trap with Thomas Brinkmann (Black Truffle). 2012) Audience of One (Touch). 2012) Connected Robin Fox (Kranky).

The Mortimer Trap is the name of a series of chess moves-the kind of trap you’d have to be a real schmuck to walk into and lose the game. If I played chess, I’d be that schmuck. But more importantly, you could read the album title as a statement about ambient music, about the fine line that runs through the genre between the utterly banal and astonishingly moving or beautiful. As a genre, ambient music is full of such traps and disguises. As its creators, Brinkmann and Ambarchi must be aware that listeners are not just hearing the music when they play the album. Also, it’s entirely unclear who’s doing what here.

Thomas Brinkmann’s glitchy confrontations and Oren Ambarchi’s cavernous guitar tones converge with unexpected chemistry on The Mortimer Trap, a 78-minute tidal drone of inconspicuous depth. Like Boris’s Absolutego and countless Nurse with Wound records, when played through anything less enveloping than headphones, it sounds like noise or – worse – nothing. But a proper setup opens you up to its frequent rewards
