Despite their reputation, Frost was Enslaved 's only true black metal album. Released shortly after a fascinating prog-Viking bout in Vikingligr veldi, this is the only stage in their career that doesn't make total sense in light of where they were going as a band. The debut album came pre-packaged with the Viking pomp of their mid-period and the 70s prog rock homages of the latter years. While the pre-frost Enslaved focused on conveying the emotions of the Vikings, Frost begins to center around depicting the Vikings themselves.

The tracks Fenris, Yggdrasil and Isoders Dronning put on a clinic on how viking metal is supposed to be done by the fathers of Viking metal. Enslaved touches on many aspects of metal on this album, using synths where they are needed to give a song a boost. Frost' is raw, gut-wrenching and extreme while 'Below the Lights' is more mellow and and progressive, essentially leaving behind the raw black metal attitude. This being a turn for better.

Frost is the second full length album from Enslaved, third official release if you include the split album "Emperor/Enslaved". It's a departure from the remarkable debut "Vikingligr Veldi", an epic that consisted of five 6-11 minute songs.
