Publisher: G. Schirmer. Through Roses (1980). The actor moves within a set; his actual speech patterns are not regimented, the text and music being connected by means of musical cues marking only the limits within which the actor’s phrases are to be spoken. The musicians are also on stage, as figments of the protagonist’s imagination. The musical allusions in Through Roses at relevant points in the drama include fragments of military marches and popular songs, as well as Haydn (the slow movement from the Emperor Quartet, the melody of Deutschland, Deutschland über alles ), Beethoven, Paganini, Wagner, Berg, Mozart, Schubert and Bach. When the protagonist recalls being forced to play Bach for the commandant of the camp, we hear this recollection as music: the violinist in the ensemble plays the opening of the Bach G minor Sonata.

Marc Neikrug, an American musical jack-of-all-trades, is one of those successful few. As a pianist, his tours with violinist Pinchas Zukerman have since 1975 been highlights of each year's concert season, and recordings made by the duo have long since run into double digits. artistic directorship of the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival. Neikrug commands a sturdy and clean keyboard technique, which he uses to provide audiences with objective, unaffected interpretations of the literature (he is in this regard perfectly suited to play alongside the objective, unaffected Zukerman). His theater-piece Through Roses (1980), for singer and eight instrumentalists, has been widely praised, as has the opera Los Alamos (1988), a compelling anti-nuclear statement.
