Nothing personal
One of my faves from the Nexus 21/Altern 8 camp. It is one of the few pre-jungle breakbeat techno records I didn't get rid of. DJ Nex Theme is my choice on here.
Small Black
Execellent EP from DJ Nex (Mark Archer) slightly tougher and less commercial than his output from Bizarre Inc and Altern 8. All four tunes are worth a play but the standout track for me is DJ Nex's Theme (which was a big DJ Randall tune from late 1992 - Where it features on a couple of A.W.O.L tapes), loads of scratching and a really uplifting piano loop. Top EP!
Still In Mind
A great but little known record, this is the first solo release by Mark Archer (early Bizarre Inc., Nexus 21, Altern 8), and it sounds much more progressive than simultaneous Altern 8 releases. In comparison to the 1992 hardcore output in general this EP sounds more timeless, with the exception of A1, which is the only mediocre track here. Respect Is Due also appeared as an Altern 8 tune on the Infiltr-8 America EP. It starts quite smooth with a typical Altern 8/Nexus 21 techno bassline, then some hardcore stabs and later an acid line kick in. The weak point about the tune is its flat and thin beat. Fluid is more spartanly arranged and makes use of a very housey beat which alternates between straight and broken. Most of tune is dominated by airy organ sounds, but just when you wouldn't expect it anymore, synths of the same type as in Re-Indulge set in. The B-side tunes are the most exciting here. DJ Nex' Theme builds on a simple but extremely effective piano riff and a slightly junglist breakbeat. It also has that technoey bass and a very nice high synth sequence with a lot of variation. When I Come, I Come Ruff sounds about as you would hope from the title: It's a devastating proto-jungle tune with melodious synths and pianos, a nasty acid line, and a kicking breakbeat. Both B-side tunes are very well produced, and all in all, this is one of my favourite Archer productions, and one of my favourite 1992 hardcore 12inches.
