Jean de La Fontaine collected fables from a wide variety of sources, both Western and Eastern, and adapted them into French free verse. They were issued under the general title of Fables in several volumes from 1668 to 1694 and are considered classics of French literature. Humorous, nuanced and ironical, they were originally aimed at adults but then entered the educational system and were required learning for school children.

We ate at Les Fables de la Fontaine on Saturday evening as a treat whilst in Paris for the weekend. We loved our meal and service was excellent. A buzzing and busy Saturday service and everything came at just the right pace - being too quick can be as bad as very slow. We chose the smoked eel and mullet tartare to start - both delicious, the mullet was a perfect spring dish, refreshing, with tastes of Lebanon - I'd love that recipe! And before that we had a tasty little amuse bouche, chilled pea soup which tasted like a mountain of peas concentrated into a few sips of deliciousness

Chantal Goya started her career as a yé-yé girl, singing a catchy mid-'60s hybrid of girl-group pop and French chanson.
