Johnny Mathis Sings the Music of Bacharach & Kaempfert is an album by American pop singer Johnny Mathis that was released in the fall of 1970 by Columbia Records. While one half of the two-record set was a compilation of tracks from his previous albums that were composed by Burt Bacharach, the other consisted of new recordings of songs composed by Bert Kaempfert, including a new version of "Strangers in the Night", which Mathis had already recorded in 1966 for his LP Johnny Mathis Sings

Johnny's relationship with Burt Bacharach dated to the late 1950s with classics including "Heavenly" and "Faithfully. Soon, Bacharach's style would define the sound of the 1960s, and Johnny was bringing his individual stamp to "This Guy's in Love with You," "I Say a Little Prayer," and "I'll Never Fall in Love Again. All of these songs and more are featured on Mathis' Bacharach salute. Combining old material with new had the net effect of making Sings the Music of Bacharach & Kaempfert seem stuffier than its 1970 companion, Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head, which concentrated on recent charting hits that had been quickly adopted as modern standards.

When I had first heard this album in the 1970's, I was stunned by Mathis' vocal technique. I recommend this album (the Kaempfert section) to anyone who appreciates the art of classic pop singing. Yes, he can be accused of only skating along on the melody of the song, but that is all he needs with these arrangements. His voice has the sensuality of a violin played by a master musician.
