Think of a Rough Guide to the United States that included blues, Gershwin, a contemporary country singer, one Cajun track, and nothing from any pop star, no rock music of any kind. You might enjoy it, and it would give you an idea of the nation's variety, but you'd be missing out on a large part of the people's everyday musical life. Perhaps this album needs a companion piece.

Chanchiki's "Yagaefu" features high-pitched female vocals alternating with shouted male exhortations, but there are also flute riffs reminiscent of Jethro Tull. As with the Rough Guide series more generally, this CD presents the listener with an extremely eclectic jumble of fascinating examples of Japanese music with the selection governed by a tender loving musicological expertise tinged with a pleasantly hip sensibility. Avoiding for the most part both premodern traditional classics and contemporary pop tunes readily found elsewhere, the focus here falls more on a wide range of modern music at once creatively intriguing and readily enjoyable.
