The Punishment of Luxury is the thirteenth studio album by English synth-pop group Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD), and the third since their 2006 reformation. Produced by OMD, it was released on 1 September 2017 by 100% Records subsidiary White Noise. In July of that year, the band commenced a tour of North America and Europe in support of the record.

Honestly, "Punishment of Luxury" might be the best OMD album. It's hard to rank them though because OMD has gone through different periods (pre Junk Culture, post Junk Culture, Sugar Tax/Liberator) in which their sound and vision changed. But, this album seems to borrow the best in spirit from each of those eras, yet it has transformed into something very unique and beautiful. 22 people found this helpful. I had not been exposed to their work before then, and I guess I didn't see any of their other videos 1980-1984 either. Of course, in 1986, there would be "If You Leave" from the Pretty in Pink soundtrack, and in the fall of 1986, their lambasted "The Pacific Age" album would be the first album I actually bought from them. Then, in 1988, from their Best Of album came "Dreaming", and then the break-up and disappearance from the American charts for good.

The 12-song The Punishment of Luxury - written, recorded, produced and mixed by OMD’s Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys - is due out Sept. 1 via White Noise Records. Of the new record, which takes its name from a 1891 painting by Giovani Segantini, McCluskey says: On this album we have managed to make beautiful things out of noises and repetitive patterns. OMD will follow up the release of the record with a tour of the . and Europe that begins in late October and runs through November into December. Before that, however, the group will play a handful of dates in California, Mexico and the Dominican Republic this summer.
