Samuel John "Lightnin'" Hopkins (March 15, 1912 – January 30, 1982) was an American country blues singer, songwriter, guitarist and occasional pianist, from Centerville, Texas. Rolling Stone magazine ranked him number 71 on its list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time. The musicologist Robert "Mack" McCormick opined that Hopkins is "the embodiment of the jazz-and-poetry spirit, representing its ancient form in the single creator whose words and music are one act".

I saw Lightning Hopkins just once in a smokey bar somewhere in downtown Denver. His presence was mesmerizing. This album reflects that experience. The sound quality of the vinyl is excellent. He does follow the Texas blues standard of thumping the bass string with his thumb and picking the treble string with his index finger, but he doesn't finger-pick, and if he has a predecessor who played as he did, I've never heard him (although the number of guitarists who followed him and imitated him is large).
