Songs in album Rockin' Horse - Yes It Is (1971). 1. Biggest Gossip In Town.

The goal of Rockin' Horse was to revive the classic Liverpool sound - in that regard, Yes It Is is a phenomenal album and an even better CD, filled up as it is with six bonus tracks. Jimmy Campbell and ex-Merseybeats bassist Billy Kinsley delivered up a record with a good rootsy feel to everything here, and the stuff that fits into a Merseybeat groove is authentic right down to the roughness in the bass work. Some of the rest is closer in spirit to what the Band shot for on Music From Big Pink and their self-titled album

Some of the rest is closer in spirit to what the Band shot for on Music From Big Pink and their self-titled album. Not all of it works, but what does - which is most of it - is a bracing update of mid-'60s British rock & roll.

Yes It is, released in 1970, is a mixture of power pop and Band influenced rural rock. The Band influenced ditties are the weakest numbers (there’s just three) on the album with the notable exception of a very good rural track titled Son, Son. The remainder of Yes It Is is first class power pop and probably the most powerful music of Campbell’s career. Tracks such as Biggest Gossip In Town and Oh Carol, I’m So Sad hark back to Campbell’s early British Invasion roots. These two gems characterize a unique album that has a ragged, ramshackle feel – very intriguing.

Yes It Is. Import, Extra Tracks, Remastered. Rockin' Horse deftly squeezed themselves into a second wave of British Invasion bands that had roots in the original Mersey Beat (band members Billy Kinsley and Tony Crane had played in The Merseys, and Jimmy Campbell had played in numerous Liverpool bands), but had also been schooled by the '60s folk revival (Campbell was a staple on the British scene) and. latter-day psychedelic sounds. Rev-Ola's deluxe reissue augments the original album's dozen tracks with four original mono 45 mixes and a pair of non-LP sides. Extensive liner notes and a song-by-song discussion with Billy Kinsley round out a full package (all that's missing are the Radio One sessions described in the liners!).

An LP that was a definite aberration on the UK scene at the time, where progressive, folk, hard rock and the beginnings of glam dominated. People have really struggled to categorise this LP over the years, perhaps because it sounded so out of place in its contemporary surroundings. I have often seen it described as psych or prog, which it isn't, while others have said it is a retro 60s LP harking back to mid 60s beat/Merseybeat, which it isn't either. This LP certainly shuns the contrived complexities of most Brit rock that was around at the time, but it could be argued it was ahead of the curve rather than retro, going for the sort of guitar heavy power pop sound that flourished later on in the decade. And yet it also owes a very obvious debt to Abbey Road/Let It Be Beatles. It sold pitifully at the time, which is a real shame as it is a mini classic and was quite a bold statement. Had it been released a few years earlier or later, it could well have sold a million.
