Ten Preludes, Op. 23, is a set of ten preludes for solo piano, composed by Sergei Rachmaninoff in 1901 and 1903. This set includes the famous Prelude in G minor. Together with the Prelude in C♯ minor, Op. 3/2 and the 13 Preludes, Op. 32, this set is part of a full suite of 24 preludes in all the major and minor keys. Op. 23 is composed of ten preludes, ranging from two to five minutes in length. Combined, the pieces take around thirty minutes to perform. They are: No. 1 in F♯ minor (Largo).
The recordings were made by Decca in sessions between October 1941 and August 1943, and then issued month by month on individual 78 rpm records, with two preludes per disc. The composer himself had recorded only seven Preludes; Lympany's colleague, Eileen Joyce, had done six of them. Read full description. See details and exclusions. Brand new: lowest price.

I miss the tenor line in the A flat Prelude (Op 23 No 8) – it is also underplayed in the 1951 performance – and some of the pieces sound less in the fingers than others. But these are minor reservations. There are simply so many glories here: the popular G minor Prelude bears comparison with any, while the lovely G flat major and G major are also the best of Lympany’s three versions. One is left wondering why such a recording has taken so long to come back into circulation.
