Howard Fine is reminiscent of Truman Capote with his poetry reading on "Nomad Song," a collaboration with Ströer Duo. On Nightfall In Camp's "Cada Día," Marie Mandi's voice drifts from the stripped-back arrangement like smoke from a cigarette. And then there's the supreme head-nodder "Minéralité" by Lou Blic, which is so good I can understand why the compilation's scope was extended into 1991.

Greatest lost album of the 80's. Impossible to find, Mood Records was a tiny label, hundreds not thousands. The band combined a punk poet with a taste for science (Howard Fine) and a fantastic pair of musicians (the Duo) versed in German jazz fusion of the time (think Passport) and Bozio style Zappa. This is music worth hunting down. Oddly, and I mean ODDLY, I think Ben Folds copped a lot of this album's chops when producing William Shatner's standout disc "Has Been" a few years back. Three tunes sound an awful lot like three songs on Nomaden. The band put on an elaborate show, part of the price of getting the German government to give you a few Deutchemarks for your art was to sell it as theatre, and even though I never saw them, the friends who did were smitten and passed the music on to me. Atmospheric, moody, kinetic, melodic and atonal. It never gets old.
