A Hard Road is the third album (and second studio album) recorded by John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers, released in 1967. It features Peter Green on lead guitar, John McVie on bass, Aynsley Dunbar on drums and John Almond on saxophone. Tracks 5, 7 and 13 feature the horn section of Alan Skidmore and Ray Warleigh. Peter Green sings lead vocals on "You Don't Love Me" and "The Same Way".

A Hard Road is not the most linear of John’s records, and certainly seems tame when compared to the previous release with a line up that included Eric Clapton. The unevenness is due in large part to its vast array of talent, and musical directions being explored. But I think in many ways this is what made A Hard Road such an outstanding release for its day. it made for the perfect album to be played on the fledgling progressive radio stations that were beginning to blossom across America

Eric Clapton is usually thought of as John Mayall's most important right-hand man, but the case could also be made for his successor, Peter Green. The future Fleetwood Mac founder leaves a strong stamp on his only album with the Bluesbreakers, singing a few tracks and writing a couple, including the devastating instrumental "Supernatural

I got my first John Mayall LP (Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton) in the late 60s. I was blown away by the album. I still think it is some of Eric's best work (and he was only about 21 when it was recorded)

John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers. I let a life slip through my fingers Where am I gonna turn? I'm the causing of the trouble And it makes my poor heart burn. I been tryin' to tell you people That the blues hit me in my life You know I was born for trouble And it's a hard road till I die. I've loved and lost so many women The cause of many broken heart Drank and drifted through the years And watched my family fall apart.
