Intense Majestic Reverent Tragic. Alexis Weissenberg, Herbert von Karajan, Riccardo Muti. Brahms: Piano Concerto No. 1; Franck: Variations symphoniques. Conductor, Primary Artist.
Composer(s): Franck. Works: Symphony In D minor; Symphonic Variations; Le chasseur maudlt. Performer: Alexis Weissenberg (piano)Orchestre de Paris, Berlin PO/Herbert von Karajan Philadelphia Orchestra/Riccardo Muti. Weissenberg in the variations is pleasing if a shade reticent; I miss the authority and brilliance of Curzon. Muti's Le chasseur is enthralling.
Franck - Symphony in D minor; Le Chasseur maudit; Les Eolides. Cesar Franck - Symphony in D Minor, Symphonic Variations, Les Eolides. This disc couples Cesar Franck's most famous orchestral works in performances under Karajan and Muti - a rather odd combination, especially given that Muti has also recorded the symphony for EMI and that his approach is so radically different from Karajan's. Karajan's approach is big and bold and colorful, not afraid to wear its heart on its sleeve, drawing the warmest and most expressive sound from the Orchestre de Paris.
Alexis Weissenberg, klavier The Philadelphia Orchestra, Riccardo Muti Berliner Philharmoniker, Herbert von Karajan. Recorded: 2/1983, The Old Met, Philadelphia (Brahms); 9/1972, e, Berlin (Franck). Digital remastering, 1988. Especially in the grand first movement, which is more like a symphony with piano, Muti and Weissenberg must have nearly brought down The Old Met in Philadelphia during the recording sessions. The piano is a bit too prominent, as usual on recordings, but otherwise the sound is natural and sumptuous, almost as terrific as Muti's Faust Symphony from the same period with the same orchestra for the same label. Weissenberg recorded Beethoven's complete concertos (with Karajan) and Chopin's complete works for piano and orchestra (with Skrowaczewski) for the same label (not to mention Mozart's Concertos Nos.
The Symphony in D minor is the most famous orchestral work and the only mature symphony written by the 19th-century naturalised French composer César Franck. After two years of work, the symphony was completed 22 August 1888. It was premiered at the Paris Conservatory on 17 February 1889 under the direction of Jules Garcin. Franck dedicated it to his pupil Henri Duparc.
