The Delfonics – along with the Intruders – were standard bearers for what would become known worldwide as the Philly Sound although their contributions to its growth are often overlooked in the rush to praise those who followed in their wake. They were the first soul act to sell a million on a Philadelphia label, and their collaborations with genius arrangercomposer Thom Bell were instrumental in launching his career as the City Of Brotherly Love’s most admired librettist. The arrangements of those, and others such as the multilayered dancer ‘Down Is Up, Up Is Down’, are matched by lead singer William Poogie Hart’s exceptional lyrics and his fragile, ethereal high tenor (an inspiration for many successful groups of the early 70s, such as the Moments and Whatnauts). The Delfonics might just be the most accomplished Philadelphia soul album in a decade that overflowed with them.

Unlike The Delfonics' two previous albums, The Delfonics consists entirely of new material with all tracks but one penned by Bell and/or lead singer William Hart. It was the group's only album to crack the top 100 on the Billboard 200 (peaking at no. 61) and contained five charting singles, including the majestic "Didn't I (Blow Your Mind This Time)", a top 10 hit and one of the most iconic soul singles of its era. The Delfonics is frequently singled out as the group's most cohesive and complete album and the high-point of their recording career  . Down Is Up, Up Is Down".

Down Is Up, Up Is Down". A pop version by New Kids on the Block was featured on the group's 1986 self-titled debut album. The song was later released as a stand-alone single during the group's Hangin' Tough era in an attempt to heighten the profile of the album it was from. Their cover of the song, slightly re-titled "Didn't I (Blow Your Mind)", peaked at number eight on both the US and UK pop charts; in the US, in October 1989; in the UK, a year later in October 1990 as a double A-side with "Let's Try It Again".
