True Democracy is a roots reggae album released by Steel Pulse in May 1982. The album was recorded over 25 days in Denmark, with legendary reggae producer Karl Pitterson. While True Democracy does see Steel Pulse return somewhat to their political roots of Handsworth Revolution and Tribute to the Martyrs, it is also more light-hearted in the vein of Caught You. True Democracy peaked at on Billboard 's Top Pop Albums Chart in 1982. All tracks written by David Hinds, except where noted.
Album · 1982 · 14 Songs. Having explored everything from party anthems to militant Rastafarian politics on their early releases, British reggae group Steel Pulse finally settled into the perfectly balanced sound that would come to define them on True Democracy. The raw, pointed lyrics of the confrontational "A Who Responsible" and biting "Man No Sober" are juxtaposed with unapologetically slick production and sophisticated, layered arrangements, especially on tracks like the fluid "Leggo Beast. This is Steel Pulse in their most mature, fully realized form. True Democracy Steel Pulse.
True Democracy (LP, Album, RE). Elektra, Elektra. Elk k 52 385, elk 52385. Sure, I love the old school roots reggae, dub and dancehall classics, but this album has stood the test of time in my book. That is not the case with this band or this album. If you love reggae, you should own this album. It's a must-have in my opinion.

Although the group's first three albums are generally considered their finest, there is a very strong case to be made for including Steel Pulse's Elektra debut in their core collection as well. Where Reggae Fever had found the band moving from hardcore Rasta politics into lover's rock and party anthems, True Democracy marks a return to more ideological subject matter; the cover art, which shows singer David Hinds reading the Bible to his rapt bandmates, is a dead giveaway.
